From Trash to Treasure
While the Council was on break, several of the aides took a tour of the Recycling Center. Recycling not only saves landfill costs but Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government can sell the recycled material and make money.
In FY 2012-13, the Lexington Recycling Center processed over 35,155 tons of material. Most of that material came from Fayette County, but some of it came from other counties such as Jessamine, Boyle, Harrison Madison, Frankfort, Anderson, and Clark.
The 35,000 tons of material brought in a total revenue of $2.1 million dollars and saved over $980,000 in land-fill fees. Recycling in Lexington not only helps us economically, it also helps support 2,500 jobs with over 750 in Kentucky.
Thanks to our Division of Waste Management for a job well-done and a special thank you Esther Moberly for such an enlightening tour.
