UK Symphony Orchestra
The University of Kentucky’s Symphony Orchestra is the focus of this month’s Council Comments. You can watch an interview with John Nardolillo, the Symphony’s Music Director and Conductor here.
The Orchestra is composed of graduate and undergraduate students selected by competitive audition and performs by itself and in conjunction with the UK Opera Theatre. It has built a tradition of performing major symphonic works with well-known artists. By doing so, the students learn directly from great masters while they work.
This May the Orchestra is going to China with performances in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tiajin at the Central Conservatory, Peking University, Renmin University, Shanghai Conservatory, Shanghai University, Tianjin Conservatory and Tianjin University. This opportunity will be a life-changing event for the students.
Mr. Nardolillo says that a student orchestra is different because there is a sense of discovery and joy that is powerful and translates into powerful music making. I have had the opportunity to experience the music of the orchestra and I agree with him. If you have not, you should make it a point to do so. You may find information about events and tickets here.
