Food Trucks Pilot Program Ready To Go

As many of you know, on June 20th the Council unanimously passed an ordinance approving a six-month pilot program to allow food trucks to vend on public streets.  The ordinance provides the following for food trucks:

  • they can operate from on-street metered public parking in identified zones Monday through Friday from 7:00 am through 5:00 pm for 2 hours
  • they can operate in all zones where it is legal to park from 5:00 pm to 3:00 am Monday through Friday, and from 7:00 am to 3:00 am on Saturdays and Sundays, with the following conditions:
    • they must be at least 100 feet away from the entrance to any business during its hours of operation unless they have permission from the business owner
    • they must be at least 100 feet from the property line of dwellings in a residential zone unless they have permission of the homeowners

The pilot program is a reasonable starting place, and will be assessed at the end of six months to see how well it is working.  Decisions will be made at that time about whether to continue the program, either as designed or with modifications.

The Council had previously discussed the pilot program on May 21st, May 23rd, and June 18th.   I have posted several blogs about this issue as it has progresed, which you can read hereherehere, here, here, and here.  The news media has also been following the issue and you can read some of those reports here, here, here, here, and here.

Thanks to Councilmember Peggy Henson who chaired the initial work group, to Council member Shevawn Akers, who chaired the latest work group, and to the members of those groups and the many others who worked so hard on crafting this program.
