Downtown Lexington Traffic Movement and Revitalization Study - North Area Analysis
The Executive Summary for the Downtown Lexington Traffic Movement and Revitalization Study, North Area Analysis, has been released. This part of the study focuses on the streets of Short, Second, North Limestone, North Upper, Fourth, and Third. The study found no major problems associated with the possible conversion of North Lime, North Upper, Short and West Second, but did indicate that there are some areas on those streets that would need further attention, including the intersection of Main Street and North Limestone, the school zone on North Limestone, West Short in front of the Opera House, and West Short between Broadway and Upper Street. Fourth Street is in the process of being returned to two-way to accommodate the developing new BCTC campus on the former site of Eastern State Hospital. The conversion of the last leg of West Third Street is complicated by the railroad crossing at Newtown Pike. The report indicates that the set of possible conversions would not be expected to degrade service for pedestrians, bicyclists, and bus riders.
You can read about the public meeting held on June 5th to discuss the issue here. The Planning and Public Works Committee received an earlier preliminary update in April, which you can watch here and get a copy of the presentation here. You can also follow the issue on the Downtown Lex Study website.
Additional public meetings will be scheduled in the next few months to discuss the Central Area and South Area pairs of streets being studied. Then there will be a comprehensive draft presented for further public input, prior to full consideration by council.
