The Kentucky Theatre - Growing Old Gracefully
I filmed my Council Comments this month at the Kentucky Theatre where I was joined by Isabel Yates, former vice-mayor and chair of the Friends of Kentucky Theatre. The Kentucky Theatre first opened in 1922 and was one of the first 50 theatres in the nation to have sound. It operated until 1987 when it was closed because of a fire. It reopened in 1992 after being purchased and renovated by the Urban County Government. You can read more about its history here.
The Kentucky Theatre celebrates its 90th birthday on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 with a party in the lobby from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. While it is aging gracefully, it needs many updates including a digital projector. You can find more about the party and opportunities to donate to its renovation here and here. The Kentucky Theatre is an iconic piece of Lexington’s history, and one of the reasons I love living downtown. Please make plans to come to the party and to support the renovation efforts.
