Living Arts and Science Center Begins Expansion
The Living Arts and Science Center (LASC) has been serving the Lexington community since 1968. They are housed in the Kincaid House, a historic home originally owned by Lincoln’s lawyer. His descendants believed that young people needed more exposure to the arts and sciences and donated the structure to LASC. Tom Eblen has written a great article about it and you can read it here.
LASC provides over 400 classes and workshops for children and adults, free art activities at community events, and sits on an 1 1/2 acre campus that has an outdoor classroom, a waterfall and stream, a butterfly garden and public art. I filmed my December Council Comments there and you can watch it here. They are a great organization providing a much needed service to this community.
They have recently begun a capital campaign to raise $5 million for renovation of the Kincaid House and the construction of an adjacent building. The expansion plans include a digital art studio, a recording studio, a teaching kitchen, and a dedicated space for a planetarium. LASC received a $1 million matching grant from the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Foundation, Inc. and has raised $300,000 in additional money.
I am excited about their commitment to expanding the vital role they play in our community and wish them great success with their capital campaign.
