Green Acres in the City - What is the world coming to?
Chickens, bees, pygmy goats, ducks, and rabbits – several cities in the U.S. are grappling with how to regulate “farm” animals in the city. For years most city ordinances addressed dogs and cats but prohibited certain farm animals or ignored them altogether. For instance, Lexington allows any animal except hogs, pigs, goats, dangerous wildlife, and any bull, cow or other animal that bellows (Ch. 4, Art. I, Sec. 4-11 & 4-12). However, Lexington does not address the keeping of chickens, bees, or a variety of other animals.
With the rise of urban agriculture, cities have had to rethink that approach. Vancouver, WA has just passed a comprehensive animal ordinance and Oakland, CA and East Wenatchee, WA are in the process of drafting ordinances. Should Lexington be next?
